Deli Man (2015)

Jewish delis are lynchpins of neighborhood, family, ritual, humor, and cardiovascular disorder. They’re also an endangered species. In the 1930’s there were over 2,000 kosher shops in the five boroughs of New York. Today, there are 140 Jewish delis in all of North America.

The documentary film, DELI MAN, produced and directed by Erik Greenberg Anjou, is a savory look at deli food and culture through their owner-operators and a retinue of mavins. DELI MAN’s principal guide is David “Ziggy” Gruber, third generation owner-operator of Kenny and Ziggy’s in Houston. But the documentary has also visited the renowned Katz’s, Carnegie, Stage, Canters, Nate ‘n Al, Ben’s Best, Manny’s, and many more. Additional interviewees include Jerry Stiller, Larry King, Professor Alan Dershowitz, and Fyvush Finkel.
